Tasting Note

2011 ‘Calypso’ Merlot + Cabernet Franc

52% Merlot, 44% Cabernet Franc, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon

Wilyabrup, Margaret River

Cabernet Franc and Merlot are often maligned from Margaret River as not being quite as good, nor as consistent as Cabernet Sauvignon. Both stars in their home of Bordeaux neither seem to have travelled as well as the stunning Cabernet Sauvignon. Genetics, rootstocks, viruses, poor site selection; these have all played a part in the lesser performance, perceived and actual, of Cabernet Franc and Merlot. However there are sites where the stars do align and grapes of great intensity and complexity are grown. We were seduced by the possibilities of this blend.

We source Cabernet Franc from 2 vineyards and Merlot from a single vineyard. The 2011 Calypso the incredible aromas display intense plum, mulberry, cherry and chocolate primary characters with subtle earthy, dried herb and floral complexity. These keep changing in the glass and will develop a great bouquet with time. The rich and layered palate shows lifted fruit with a dense texture but balanced with super fine tannins on the midpalate. These fruit tannins drive the palate through the finish with lingering berry and dark chocolate. A cracking blend from a superb vintage, full of intense fruit and ripe tannins.
