  • Background

We have been making Cannonball since 2011 and we have evolved our approach. Originally conceived as a Bordeaux-style blend, we have moved to a more dominant Cabernet Sauvignon style utilizing different Cabernet clones with smaller nuances of other varieties. We have always regarded Cabernet Sauvignon as the best of the red varieties in Margaret River and this is our offering for those who feel the same.

  • Vintage Notes

The 2023 season budburst was even and on time but a cool growing season led to later flowering and set. Cool, dry weather throughout the growing season preserved fruit freshness and skin condition while the cool nights kept acid balance. The longer ripening on our northern site meant seed tannin ripeness matched fruit ripeness, critical for well balanced Cabernet Sauvignon.

  • Winemaking

Harvested over several days in March and April, the various parcels of Cabernet Sauvignon were fermented separately, and pressed at both dryness and extended maceration. Maturation was in a variety of new (9%) and older barriques and puncheons for 10 months. Bottling was in January 2024.

  • Tasting Notes

The 2023 Cannonball Cabernet Sauvignon is bright and juicy on the nose: Blackberry, satsuma, mulberry and some earthy complexity. The palate is mouthfilling with fleshy red and black fruits, black olive and dark chocolate complexity, a touch of subtle spicy oak and succulent fine tannins. The finish is long and fine, driven by ripe tannin, persistent fruit and balanced acid. Great with Cabernet nerd buddies
