The 2023 fruit profile is more grapefruit, melon, spice and white flowers with great focus and drive. Underlying complexity of almond meal, brioche and a whiff of flint are due to barrel and malolactic fermentation, and time on lees. We have used less new oak this year due to the finer structure of the fruit. I really think this one of most balanced and elegant Corduroy Chardonnays with great fruit line and subtle layers of complexity. Super fresh drinking now but will age gracefully for 10 years.

Chardonnay is the pinnacle of white wines in Margaret River and we love the finesse and natural acidity in chardonnay from the Karridale sub-region. Higher rainfall and humidity means there is less moisture stress on the vineyards. Cooler days and nights preserve natural acidity and grow finesse, length and complexity.

  • Vintage Notes

The 2023 season budburst was even and on time but a cool growing season led to later flowering and set. Cool, dry weather throughout the growing season is ideal Chardonnay conditions and leads to fruit with finesse, power and great natural acidity.

  • Winemaking

After chilling in a cold room overnight we press the whole bunches of chardonnay direct to barrel: no clarifying, no acid added, no added yeast. The wild ferment kicks off in mostly puncheons plus a couple of smaller barrels (29% new French oak) and takes approx. 2-3 weeks. After 10 months on yeast lees (without sulphur dioxide) in oak the wine is assembled (with a small sulphur addition) and was bottled in January 2024. All barrels had finished malolactic fermentation. We made 400 dozen.
